Hi Jim,

Well I bought a Velbon El Carmagne tripod with a Velbon head. Small (folds to 20"), light (carbon fiber and magnesium -- just over 3 pounds). It works well with my 100 - 400 lens (my old one doesn't). Very hugh quailty of manufacture. The whole thing was $259. This'll do me until I get rich!

Yes -- the 2200 aluminum is on my list. Also the Acratech Ultimate Ball Head w/ All Rubberized Knobs. That's about $550 -- still a lot of $$....

Thanks Frank, let me know what you decide on. $1000 is a little extreme but the Gitzo Explorer is def on my list. I really like the center support design on the Gitzo for macro work but I think the aluminum for $249 might be what I end up buying. This site has some good photos of the explorer in action.

I need a new tripod/ballhead too. But I'm not willing to spend $1000! First of all I don't think need cf. But I do need a tripod that's easier to set up and a much more flexible ballhead. I'll let you know if I come up with something.
